PODCAST: Pedro done for the day

Pedro Martinez completed his final spring training tune-up this morning, throwing 80 pitches in six innings in a minor league intra-squad game.

Martinez is scheduled to start the second game of the season at Florida.

Coming off shoulder surgery, Martinez made only five starts last year. He took it slowly this spring and said he’s healthy, and that if he remains healthy, ``things will happen.’’

PODCAST: Alou shows up; hopes to play before May

Moises Alou showed up in camp this morning to spend the last week of spring training with his teammates. Alou hopes to begin baseball-related activities in two weeks and said his goal is to play before the end of April.

Alou underwent hernia surgery, March 6, and is now riding an exercise bike.

Alou said he didn’t do anything strenuous, but woke up with a sharp pain in the groin area.

PODCAST: Pedro sharp in first start

Pedro Martinez was sharp in his first exhibition start of the spring, giving up four hits in four scoreless innings. Martinez made only five starts last year after shoulder surgery and has been taking it slowly in camp.

Martinez said his change-up was good, but his curve is a little off. That’s not unusual because that’s always his last pitch to come along.

PODCAST: Santana pleased with start

``I’m right where I need to be,’’ Johan Santana said after this afternoon’s three-inning outing against Los Angeles. One run on two hits with four strikeouts was his line.

Santana said there’s more work to do, but it’s only his second start so that’s to be expected considering he says this ``is a progression.’’

Willie Randolph anticipates the news being good on today’s injuries. Carlos Delgado went to NY for a MRI on his right hip. The results could come later tonight. Ryan Church sustained a concussion and Marlon Anderson a bruised chest when they collided in the outfield.

Randolph also praised pitching prospects Jonathan Niese and Robert Parnell, and said it was good catching up with Joe Torre.

The Mets greeted the day with the news Carlos Delgado was in New York for a MRI on his right hip. It’s the same one he injured last year and missed nearly three weeks.

Omar Minaya doesn’t seem concerned, but it’s early. The Mets have some temporary options, but if this guy goes down for a month or two, they’ll have problems.

Johan Santana said the Cardinals were looking to jump on him early and that’s what hurt him this afternoon.

Santana said he was happy to get the first one out of the way, and admitted to being a little excited. He also said, “I have a lot of work to do.’’

PODCAST: Pelfrey sharp

Mike Pelfrey was impressive this afternoon, giving up one hit in two scoreless innings against the Tigers.

Pelfrey entered the game wanting to establish his fastball and challenge hitters in the zone, which he was able to do by falling behind only one batter. For this early in the spring, he flashed dominance.

Pitching coach Rick Peterson said it has been a long road back for reliever Duaner Sanchez, and today’s outing was just another step. Peterson said Sanchez was throwing 90, which is a little off his max.

Johan Santana said it’s a process, and that on the first day he’s not going to ``do anything crazy.’’ His fastball isn’t where he wants it to be, but that wouldn’t be fair if it was, said Damion Easley.

Willie Randolph believes Carlos Delgado will have a bounce-back season and last year was just an off-year and not the beginning of the end. If Delgado has another year like last season, then maybe.

Randolph said he’s also pleased with the energy in camp and with how reliever Duaner Sanchez is throwing.

PODCAST: Randolph gives state of the Mets address

Mets manager Willie Randolph said he turned the page on last season when he arrived in Florida the last week.

``Spring training is a time of renewal,’’ Randolph said. ``It’s a time for optimism and a chance to feel something special possibly happening again.’’

Randolph said:

-Jose Reyes went through a slump and nothing more at the end of last season.

-There aren’t many position battles on the team, but that could change with injuries.

-The addition of Johan Santana gives the Mets a swagger, but they also need continued improvement from John Maine and Oliver Perez.

-And for now, Ryan Church is the right fielder.

It took awhile, but “Moises Alou”:http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?statsId=4517 is back to being a viable player again. He’s been sizzling lately, hitting .423 with three homers and 10 RBI over his last seven games.

Manager Willie Randolph said while the Mets survived without him, they are far better off with him in the line-up.
