On Tap Today ….

August

-A lot of players are on a tour this morning of the Walter Reed Army Medical Center.

-John Maine will be activated to start tonight. Carlos Muniz was optioned last night to make room for him. Maine has been on the disabled list, retroactive to July 29, with a mild strain of his right rotator cuff. [...]

About Last Night ….

August
13

-If the Mets are to do anything this season, they need to solve their bullpen issues, and that means results have to come from the guys who are paid in that role. Good effort last night by Joe Smith and Pedro Feliciano.

-Jose Reyes has reached the 40 stolen base plateau for the fourth straight season.

-Say [...]

My story in the Journal News: Bullpen holds it for Santana.

August
13

WASHINGTON _ An idea Mets manager Jerry Manuel flat out rejected less than two weeks ago is now under consideration.

Or is it?

When the Mets were in Florida at the end of last month, Manuel dismissed the concept of using starting pitchers on their between-starts throw days out of the bullpen, but prior to last night's [...]

Mets Chat Room: Overcoming those bullpen blues edition.

August

Of all the Met starters, nobody personifies the woes of the bullpen more than Johan Santana, who has had six leads blown. That's 15 wins by now with a perfect pen.

-John Maine is still on for being activated to start Wednesday at Washington. Maine went on the disabled list, July 29, with a strained right rotator cuff.

-Ryan Church is taking part in baseball activities with Single-A Port St. Lucie. The Mets don't have a date when he will start playing in rehab games. Church is [...]

Cashing in ….

August
12

As if you didn't already know, but the Mets will make a pile of money at Citi Field. The average price will be $495 for the premium seats, which is a 79 percent increase from this season. In contrast, the top price at the new Yankee Stadium will be $2,500.

Said Mets VP Dave Howard: "We [...]

The Last Resort ….

August
12

From now until Billy Wagner is eligible to return next Monday, manager Jerry Manuel said he might consider using starters John Maine, Oliver Perez and Mike Pelfrey out of the bullpen.

Manuel defined the problem as "finishing" games, and said that was the seventh inning on.

Manuel also said he would use a starter in a set-up [...]

Church vs. Milledge ….

August
12

Sure, why not bring up the question again?

Ryan Church has been next to useless since late May, but I still like the deal. I don't believe Lastings Milledge would have ever become comfortable in New York and lived up to the hype.
Going under the assumption Church would eventually become healthy (if not this year then [...]

Greetings from DC ….

August
12

Hello from DC.  The pressbox window that was shattered Opening Day is still a spiderweb. Maybe Opening Day next year.

Interesting cab experience. My cabbie dropped me off at the wrong end of the stadium. When he saw me walking he did a U-turn and picked me up again. No charge. He must be new in [...]

Closing woes ….

August
12

So, do you miss Billy Wagner now? He had his problems, but as the saying goes, "you don't know what you have until it is gone."

Aaron Heilman is not the answer this year to anything. I don't know if starting him is the solution. If he can't get guys out at the end of the [...]

Mets Chat Room: Good-bye off day edition.

August
11

Make up game this afternoon at Shea. Pedro Martinez will make his third start since July 12 today vs. Pittsburgh.

In a little over 11 innings in those two games he's given up five homers.

He's calling it rust.

Mets Chat Room: Putting away the Fish Edition.

August
10

Good afternoon. Sorry for the late post. I've said this before, but I do like what's going on with Murphy. He still could end up a flash in the pan, but it's not like he's hit a lot of homers off mistake pitches.
