Sometimes, You Just Lose

It’s worth keeping in mind that last night’s 3-2 loss to the Phillies happened despite matchups working out extremely well for the New York Mets.
In the ninth inning, up 2-1, the Mets sent out lefty Josh Edgin to close the game. Frank Francisco was unavailable due to elbow tendinitis, but Edgin might have been the right call anyway, given the players coming up. Jimmy Rollins (.641 OPS vs. lefties) struck out; the most dangerous batter of the inning, pinch-hitter Ty Wigginton, struck out. Wigginton is at .773 OPS against lefties in 2012.
That left Chase Utley, .669 OPS vs. lefties, was next, and he worked out a walk. Still, two outs, one on, that brought up Ryan Howard. The well-paid first baseman is at .564 against lefties in 2012; he is, at this point, a near-automatic out against good lefties. In fact, against power pitchers of any stripe, his OPS this year is .557.
Edgin is no slouch lefty, either; a .498 OPS against lefties this season is essentially Pedro Feliciano-plus. And with an average fastball of 93.2 miles per hour, he certainly qualifies as a power pitcher.
You’re going to have trouble finding a more perfect situation than this one. It just didn’t work out.
