Totally Stumped

I really don’t get it. Not at all.
The Mets talked it over, and decided on Monday to let Johan Santana keep pitching. They did this despite acknowledging that along with his ankle injury not being fully healed, and his you know, shoulder still recovering from massive surgery, that his back hurts, too.
I mean, let’s be clear here. The Mets could have come out and insisted Santana was 100 percent healthy, and I still wouldn’t understand this move. He’s getting crushed. The team has nothing to play for. Why resting him now, and getting him ready for next season, when he’ll consume roughly a third of the team’s payroll, wouldn’t be the default decision is still beyond me.
But everyone’s acknowledging that Santana isn’t 100 percent. Santana himself has pointed out that he ramped up for 2012 six weeks earlier than normal, meaning he’s at roughly the end of his season typically. Oh, and by the way, the two most common reasons pitchers get hurt is either compensating for another injury, or fatigue.
Yet out he goes. And Terry Collins had the added confidence boost of mentioning it was Johan Santana’s decision.
Don’t blame the decision-makers if he gets hurt. Blame the guy whose entire career is based around being hyper-competitive.
To those who think Santana wouldn’t go out there if he could get hurt: were you watching in June? A cautious Santana doesn’t throw 134 pitches to secure the no-hitter. Were you watching in September 2010, when Santana threw a bullpen through pain with what turned out to be a massive shoulder injury?
The Mets are not taking the responsible road here. And I am at a loss as to why. Truly. Sandy Alderson said Santana wants to end on a high note.
That’s a whole lot of risk for a feel-good start.
