Cheaters Occasionally Win

I can’t speak for you, but when the SNY broadcast last night returned from commercial to a scene of R.A. Dickey and Terry Collins heatedly talking to the umpires, I had one thought: Joe Niekro.
Remember this?
I don’t know if it was just all the Melky Cabrera sanctimony or what, but I immediately flashed to a place where Dickey’s heroics, one of the real bright spots in New York Mets history, would be replaced with discussions of legitimacy.
Fortunately, it turned out to just be umpires using their discretionary power in an indiscriminate way to throw off the timing of a pitcher and force him to remove a precious keepsake from his children. It’s cool, though. All he has to do is get another bracelet from them, then re-climb Mt. Kilimajaro. Totally worth enforcing.
Ultimately, I don’t much care about what players put in their bodies. I’m not particularly convinced that the advantages of policing it are worth things like hearing sportswriters convict Jeff Bagwell of steroid use, absent evidence, because they aren’t convinced by his denials and lack of evidence suggesting he used.
But that’s the point: Dickey’s emergence isn’t tainted by anything at this point. And I am relieved that remained the case. As for replacing umpires with robots: there’s more of an argument for that than ever.
