The Orioles are not the Rockies or the Padres, the Astros or the Cubs, and thats what makes holding their offense to only three runs in a series impressive.

On Wednesday night, the Mets held on to a 4-3 victory in the ninth inning at Citi Field to sweep a three game set from the Orioles. Mets’ starter Dillon Gee was masterful, continuing the brilliant performances put on by Johan Santana and R.A. Dickey the previous two days.

Gee held the Baltimore offense – ranked 13 in runs, and third in home runs in Major League Baseball – to just one hit through seven innings. But, the Orioles refused be shutout again. In the top of the 8th inning, Nick Johnson singled and Wilson Betemit homered to right field to cut the Mets’ lead to two.

Dillon Gee recorded another out by striking out Steve Tolleson, but then walked Steve Pearce. Terry Collins went to his bullpen and called upon Bobby Parnell, rather than his newly designated eighth inning man Miguel Batista.

Parnell allowed a single from Brian Roberts to put the tying run on base, but then retired J.J. Hardy and Chris Davis in order. Parnell did his job, and did not allow a run.

The Mets scored their four runs across the 4th, 5th and 6th innings. Hairston and Wright both delivered RBI doubles. Ike Davis, and Mike Nickeas also drove in a run a piece. That would be enough, even as Frank Francisco worked himself into a jam.

Francisco started the 9th by forcing Adam Jones to ground out, but Matt Wieters, and Johnson singled. Betemit, who had homered previously, came to the plate as the potential go-ahead run. Francisco tied him up and Betemit lifted a high pop up that Davis caught in foul ground.

The Orioles were down to their final out, and Mark Reynolds walked. The bases were juiced, nowhere to put Pearce, but first base?

Francisco walked Pearce pushing Wieters home. The bases were loaded, and the Orioles were down just a run as Roberts grounded out to end the game.

The Mets are off tomorrow, before they welcome the New York Yankees to Citi Field for the second edition of the 2012 Subway Series on Friday.
