What Has Me Optimistic Today

It is only appropriate, when the Mets just swept a very good Tampa Bay Rays team on the road while outscoring them, 29-9, to talk about what has me optimistic. We’ll leave the defense and the bullpen for another day.
The Mets are fourth in the National League in runs scored. Fourth!
Think about that. That’s with absolutely no production, really, from Ike Davis. That’s with basically no production from Jason Bay. That’s with Josh Thole checking in at an 85 OPS+ and having missed about a month. That’s with Ruben Tejada out over a month already. That’s with Daniel Murphy way below his career offensive norms.
And they are fourth in the NL.
The best part is, Davis and Bay are showing signs of life. Thole and Murphy are likely to improve. Tejada should be back at some point.
That’s all probably enough to more than offset regression from David Wright, who probably isn’t, alas, a .354 hitter.
Finally, at least offensively, the stats are starting to align with our hopes and dreams for the New York Mets.
