How Valuable Has R.A. Dickey Been?

When R.A. Dickey first started pitching for the Mets, his strong outings were treated like a parlor trick that would soon be exposed. But after Sunday’s outing, pitching into the ninth innings to give the Mets a series win over Arizona, I wondered: just how good has Dickey been for the Mets?
Compare him to the starting pitchers in baseball, from 2010 to now, and Dickey currently ranks 21st in the major leagues in wins above replacement, with 7.4. That puts him in a tie with David Price of Tampa Bay, and just ahead of Dan Haren, Hiroki Kuroda, Gavin Floyd, John Danks and Tim Lincecum.
Think about that company for a moment. Price and Lincecum are generally regarded as aces. Danks signed a massive contract extension this past offseason. Kuroda will make more money in 2012 than Dickey has made in his three seasons with the Mets. Haren was acquired for six players in 2007, four players in 2010.
And Dickey, picked up from the scrap heap in 2010 and signed to an extremely team-friendly contract extension prior to 2011, has outperformed them all.
