Mets Add Emaus, Lewis

The Mets added a pair of potentially useful pieces this evening, signing infielder Brad Emaus and outfielder Fred Lewis to minor league deals.
The deals aren’t the kind to lift a team into contention, but are worth praising. Lewis plays all three outfield positions, and has a solid .780 OPS career against right-handed pitchers. Put another way: if the Mets were looking to set Scott Hairston up in a platoon in left or right field, Lewis would be a perfectly reasonable guy to join Hairston in it.
As for Emaus, the patience and power at second base should provide depth there. I think the move tells us that they aren’t sold on Bobby Scales, the second baseman at Buffalo, to step in if the Mets need someone at the position.
I honestly thought the Mets gave up too quickly on Emaus last year, and I’m glad to see him back. Remember: the best organizations get both the big moves and the small moves right.
