In news that will warm the cockles of any Mets fan hearts- though I must stress, cockles of the heart is a serious medical condition, and you ought to see a doctor- Johan Santana has been officially designated the Opening Dat starter.
This is no guarantee that he will throw 200 innings, or even be effective on Thursday when the Mets play the Braves at Citi Field. But that’s true for anyone- and merely the fact that Santana has recovered sufficiently to get to make this start is fantastic news, both on a personal level for Santana and on a baseball level for a Mets team in desperate need of everything to go right.
One thing that will be interesting to see- does this move Opening Day inventory at all? Those tickets are still plentiful, five days out.
But at various points in the spring, it looked like the opener would be held without Santana, Ike Davis or David Wright. As of now, looks like all three vital cogs will be there. Should make the day quite a bit more festive.

7-19. Worst record in the grapefruit league. There’s a reason for that. That it’s all wiped out on Wednesday means only that it starts all over again on Thursday. This is New York?
