I am excited to report that I will be heading down to Port St. Lucie this week to provide some first-person reporting of New York Mets spring training. If you’ve never done it, I cannot recommend it highly enough. The combination of experiencing baseball that much sooner, the more relaxed atmosphere for players and fans alike, the opportunity to casually see dozens of players within the minor league system you’d have to travel hundreds of miles to glimpse- it is a spectacular experience from a baseball perspective alone.
And it is tremendous fun.
Anyhow, what I generally do is spend the hours wandering, talking to players who are of interest to me, but do a lot of watching and listening. I’ll be in the clubhouse, so I try to pay close attention to what a pitcher did in a particular situation so I can get an insight into why he chose the pitch he did in a particular situation after the game. (I found Chris Capuano’s approach to Albert Pujols particularly illuminating last spring, for instance.)
But what are you looking for? Interviews? (I can upload those right to the site, as soon as I’ve completed them.) Pictures? Little tidbits of info?
Let me know your thoughts, either here or on Twitter @lohudmets.
