There Used to Be a (Slightly Bigger) Ballpark

Three major points to get to today in Mets land, so I figured I’d start with the reasonably positive. The team made the long-rumored changes to Citi Field public yesterday, and there’s a lot to like within them [1].
The new wall in left field will be a bit closer, and home runs must only clear an eight-foot fence now, rather than 16. The power alley in left-center has been significantly shortened as well. And the elimination of the Mo’s Zone indentation will make it easier for lefties to hit home runs to right field.
Look, I don’t happen to think these changes were particularly necessary. As I’ve written before [2], the Mets actually gained an advantage by their home ballpark, one greater than the typical home field edge from an offense/pitching perspective. But though my baseball tastes run toward the traditional (I prefer pitchers’ duels/no DH), if David Wright is happier in 2012 Citi Field, that’s fine by me, too. I also trust the current baseball operations people to have crunched the numbers, and figure out a way to use the new dimensions to New York’s advantage.
My point was never that changing the dimensions would ruin Citi Field or the Mets. I just don’t think it solves much by itself, and to be fair, I don’t think Sandy Alderson does, either. Also, I’ll bet those new outfield seats in left are cool, though I’m more of a between-home-and-first man myself.
Overall, the changes make me miss baseball season. But that was the case anyway. Curious to hear your thoughts on the new dimensions.
