The season may be winding down, but there are a number of events worth checking out in Mets land this week and next.
On Friday night, September 23, the Mets will be honoring the Under-10 South Orangetown softball team, winners of the New York state championship. The Orangetowners finished 17-1, becoming the most successful softball team in their age group in Rockland County history. And they mercy-ruled their opponent in the championship game, 12-2.
In true Moneyball fashion, Kaitlyn Borruso, Jessica Ragonesi, Kayla McKiernan, Elizabeth Coyle and Megan Coyle all drew a walk in the championship game, while Madison Kousoulas and Brianna Scollan were Scott Hattebergian with two apiece. The juggernaut also included Nicole Malpeli (two hits), Samantha Ford, Taylor Lepore and Emma Paskowski.
And it is unlikely that the Mets will need Johan Santana to return anytime soon, with pitcher Emily Trozzo, who struck out 11 of the 12 batters she faced, in the park.
Coach Theresa O’Brien and the team will be on hand Friday to receive “The Spirit Award” from the Mets.
Of course, the visit may come a few days too late, with Darth Vader and his storm troopers on their way to Citi Field for tonight’s game against the Nationals. Fans in attendance will receive a cool Star Wars/Mets t-shirt, which ranks for me as the best promotion of the season so far. As Yoda might have said, “Get fans into the ballpark any way we can we must!”
And if you are looking for some reading and signing, I am happy to report that I’ll be at the amazing Word Bookstore in Brooklyn Wednesday night at 7 for a reading from my newest book, “Taking The Field”. Several other authors and beer will also be provided, including Metsgrrl’s Caryn Rose. Sources close to the event tell me a good time will be had by all.
