As the countdown to the Carlos Beltran ticks away, it is beginning to feel like Christmas morning. A complicated Christmas morning, to be sure, since while whatever is under the tree in prospects will be exciting, one quick look around will reveal that your father’s also left town.
But these are the Mets: total victories don’t seem to come with the blue and orange. And a deal of Beltran for Mike Minor, who the Mets are reportedly scouting, would be just fantastic.
Minor was the fourth-rated prospect in the Atlanta organization by Baseball America this spring, and John Sickels gave him a B+. He is a 6’4” lefty with a plus-plus changeup and a fastball in the 91-94 range. He’d slot into the rotation immediately, and both publications list his upside as number 2 starter, whatever that means for a team whose Opening Day starter was Mike Pelfrey. He projects to be quite good.
This, like Domonic Brown, would represent a very good return for two months of Carlos Beltran. My Beltran Booty rating for this potential haul is “Arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrraign Sandy Alderson for Grand Larceny.”

Why has Mike Minor been such a publicized Braves prospect? His numbers have never had a “wow” factor at any level in the minor leagues. I realize the value of a lefty with an arm, but what is his a potential if he’s already been buried by better prospects like Tommy Hanson. Also, the fact he’s a lefty pitcher and only the 4th rated prospect in the Braves’ minor leagues kinda scares me.
Ryan, I think fourth in such a stacked org is actually a good thing. But his command in conjunction with his stuff make me bullish on his future. Certainly, I like it as a haul for a two-month rental.
Come on,yo’re trading 2 months of Beltran, a solid B prospect (and lefty starter) would be a reat haul.
