Over the next few days (or hours, if the Mets strike sooner), I’ll be briefly profiling some of the players rumored to be the return for Carlos Beltran, how they fit with the Mets, and how excited a pirate Mets fan would be if such a trade occurs. Up first: Domonic Brown, Philadelphia Phillies. Here’s John Sickels on Brown from last summer, for a primer of how he got here.
Brown has an OPS+ of 101 this season in the major leagues at age 23, and has absolutely battered the minors. He has a broad base of skills, a great power-speed combination, and could fit at any of the three outfield positions.
In short, sign me up! If it takes more than Beltran, and the Mets need to throw in a Tim Byrdak, that is worth it- Brown is a building block piece. I am skeptical about exactly what the return will be for two months of anyone until it happens. But the Phillies haven’t been shy about leveraging tomorrow for now (see Ryan Howard’s contract, among other moves), and unlike years past, the guy negotiating for New York is more savvy than the guy negotiating for Philadelphia.
Alderson ridded the team of the K-Rod bonus, and is getting a pair of minor leaguers to boot. I won’t rule out a deal for Domonic Brown as a possibility. Let’s hope the Phillies don’t, either.
I rate this Beltran Booty: Arrrrrrrrrrrrythemia-inducing.
