Good afternoon! Did you enjoy your break? We learned that K-Rod will not be closing games for the Mets, nor clogging their 2012 payroll. The former is a short-term loss, the latter a big longer-term win. And we learned that if you have a no-trade list, better get it to your employer yourself.
And the reason why that makes sense is, these Mets probably aren’t contenders. At the very least, a team trailing a strong wild card leader like Atlanta by 7.5 games, and division leader Philadelphia by 11 games, has no business conducting its business as if it is 2011 or bust. That’s how Scott Kazmirs get dealt for Victor Zambranos. (And that is the hope, I’m sure, for what the Mets get in return for Carlos Beltran.)
Still, the Mets are back in town, and the Phillies are here. Baseball will continue to be played. Soon, it appears, it will be played with Jose Reyes and David Wright on the field, adjacent to one another.
But for now, baseball is back. A miracle is possible, but that is for the fans to wish for. The front office, on the other hand, is making responsible decisions so that future miracles become distinctly unmiraculous.
