While You Were Sleeping: K-Rod Traded

The press release rolled into the inbox just after midnight. The Mets traded Francisco Rodriguez to the Milwaukee Brewers early this morning for two players to be named later and cash considerations, according to the Mets, though the New York Post is reporting that the considerations are that the Mets are considering, then sending, $5 million to Milwaukee.
The move should come as a relief to those concerned that the Mets would be on the hook for K-Rod’s 2012 option, an expensive $17.5 million if the closer finished 55 games. He was on pace to do so.
Lost in all the discussion of K-Rod’s contract and off-field issues was this reality: he’s been one of the best closers the team ever had. This is also a clear signal that Sandy Alderson either isn’t fooled by the team’s success into thinking that New York can challenge Atlanta or Philadelphia, or that ownership cannot afford to take the chance with K-Rod’s 2012 regardless.
Ideally, it is the former, and the Mets can make better use of K-Rod’s salary on the 2012 team. If the money simply staves off a team sale for a bit longer, that’s nothing to celebrate.
More on the two players received as I find out. But make no mistake: this is all about the money.
