The Day After: Baseball!

Posted By Howard Megdal On May 24, 2011 @ 8:43 am In Today's Mets headlines | Comments Disabled

One of the perks of the Fred Wilpon/New Yorker article publishing in May is that, unlike all of the unwelcome developments this winter, the ill will generated from yesterday’s storm can be counteracted by actual baseball.

The Mets head to Wrigley Field tonight to take on a Cubs team that has a worse record than the Mets, finds itself further out of first place than the Mets, and will throw two pitchers with ERAs over 6 at New York. (The third is Carlos Zambrano, checking in at a still-high 4.88.) The Mets get to miss Matt Garza and his 11 strikeouts per nine innings entirely. Who says they’re snakebitten, baby? Oh, right.

So circumstances are lined up for the Mets to take the words of their leader to heart, Major League-style. A sweep of the Cubs, followed by 2 of 3 from the Phillies this weekend at Citi Field, and the Mets would find themselves back over .500 and within hailing distance of first place heading into four very winnable games with the Pirates.

It will still be a brief snapshot of the 162-game season, but the stories could change tenor in a hurry.

Some other notes:

Looks like Angel Pagan will resume rehab in Buffalo on Wednesday. With success there, he could join the Mets for the series against Philadelphia this weekend.

Johan Santana is scheduled to throw off of a mound this week, which could pave the way for an early-July return.

David Wright and the Mets are both hopeful that he can return when eligible on May 31, though a little extra caution would be both prudent and is likely under this new management team.
