Mejia Tears MCL

Some news to dampen enthusiasm from the Mets: Jenrry Mejia has a complete tear of his Medial Collateral Ligament, according to a press release from the team. He is seeking a second opinion, but the injury will likely end his season.
Mejia was used in a fairly ludicrous manner last season. He was rushed to the major leagues, where Jerry Manuel vowed that he needed Mejia. Then Manuel used him as a mopup man.
Then, after returning to the minor leagues, he was stretched out to start in a highly unorthodox way- repeatedly on short rest. (No, seriously.) Then, after that forced an injury shutdown, a couple of strong Triple-A starts landed him in the big league rotation- where he got knocked around, then shut down again.
It is impossible to know if the way the Mets used him last year caused this. After all, babied pitchers get injured constantly as well. But if pitching prospects are like riding a motorcycle, the Mets’ treatment of Mejia was like riding a motorcycle into oncoming traffic.
Too bad Sandy Alderson’s prudent treatment came too late to prevent this injury. Or, perhaps it would have happened anyway. It sure would feel different if the team had taken every precaution with Mejia, though.
