Mets make more small signings

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. (AP) – Right-hander Boof Bonser has agreed to a minor league contract with the New York Mets.
The 29-year-old went 1-0 with a 6.12 ERA in 15 relief appearances with Oakland and Boston last season. He also went 2-3 with a 5.59 ERA at Triple-A Sacramento and Pawtucket.
A first-round draft selection of San Francisco in 2000, Bonser is 19-25 with a 5.18 in four major league seasons, including three with Minnesota.
It was also announced previously that the Mets signed backup catcher Ronny Paulino to a one-year $1.3 million deal and right-handed reliever D.J. Carrasco for two years at $2.5 million. Paulino will miss the first eight games of the season for testing positive for performance-enhancing drugs that he says was a diet pill.
You can expect more of these little signings over marquee ones like the Red Sox made for Carl Crawford and the offer the Yankees made to Cliff Lee. It’s hard to imagine that the Mets still will have a $130 million payroll next season if they give R.A. Dickey, Angel Pagan and Mike Pelfrey arbitration raises, which they’re likely to do.
But that’s what you get when you’re paying $12 million for Oliver Perez and $6.25 million for Luis Castillo, who admittedly showed play closer to his payday.
