Mets embarrassing on Hall of Fame day

A day that started with a celebration, in which Daryl Strawberry, Dwight Gooden, Frank Cashen and Davey Johnson were inducted into the Mets Hall of Fame, ended with an embarrassing 14-1 loss at the hands of one of the worst teams in the major leagues.
The Diamondbacks have won five of the six games they’ve played against the Mets, who are now just one game over .500. at an even .500. For a team that has been so good at home, the Mets ended this home stand only winning half of their games.
Jon Niese looked like he was going to have another good outing, cruising through the first three innings. As a matter of fact, he had a no-hitter through the first three. That quickly went downhill.
In the fourth inning, Niese allowed five consecutive hits including a three-run homer by Adam LaRoche. LaRoche hurt the Mets again in the fifth inning with his second three-run homer of the day. After Mark Reynolds was walked, Niese’s day was done.
Elmer Dessens came on in long relief but only ended giving up the long ball. After allowing a two-run hit in the fifth, Dessens allowed back-to-back solo shots in the seventh.
With the game out of hand and out of reach for the Mets, they gave the mop-up duty to Oliver Perez. He was OK in the eighth inning only allowing a run on two hits. However, in the ninth he walked the leadoff batter and gave up two more hits and a sacrifice fly to put the Diamondbacks up 14-1.
The Mets’ only run came in the fourth inning off an Ike Davis sacrifice fly. With the Mets franchise slugger, Strawberry, watching, the Mets mustered five hits and committed two errors. How embarrassing it must’ve been for the entire team to flop so poorly on a day when so many World Series winners were looking on.
Things only get more tough as the Mets take the road with series against the Braves and the Phillies. If the Mets don’t win at least half of this week’s games, you can pretty much kiss this season goodbye.
