Mets call up infield help with Reyes ailing

The New York Mets Friday announced that they recalled infielder Justin Turner from Buffalo (AAA) of the International League and optioned infielder/outfielder Nick Evans to Binghamton (AA) of the Eastern League. Turner, who bats and throws righthanded, will wear uniform #2 and was available for Friday’s game in San Francisco.
Turner, 25, hit .297 (52-175) with 26 runs scored, nine doubles, three home runs and 16 RBI in 42 games for Buffalo, splitting time between second base and shortstop. He joined the Bisons on May 25 after being claimed off waivers from the Baltimore Orioles.
With Jose Reyes suffering from a sore oblique, the Mets felt they needed more infield help instead of one more outfielder like Evans.
This will be Turner’s second stint at the major league level this season. The 5-11, 200-pound infielder appeared in five games for the Orioles from April 12-23, going hitless in nine at-bats before being optioned to Norfolk (AAA) of the International League. In two separate stays with the Tides, Turner hit .250 (21-84) with 11 runs scored, eight doubles, one home run and eight RBI.
The Long Beach, Calif., native played collegiately at Cal State Fullerton and was selected by Cincinnati in the seventh round of the 2006 First Year Player Draft. Acquired by the Orioles in a four-player swap in 2008, he made his major league debut on Sept. 8 of last season and struck out as a pinch hitter at Boston. Over 12 career games in the major leagues, Turner has three hits in 27 at-bats (.111) and three RBI.
Evans went hitless in two pinch-hit at-bats for the Mets after being recalled on July 9 from Binghamton. He returns to the B-Mets where he hit .290 (88-303) with 54 runs scored, 24 doubles, 15 home runs and 46 RBI in 77 games. The 6-2, 220-pound slugger also was named to the Eastern League All-Star team earlier this month.
