Darling’s thoughts on Steinbrenner’s passing

I had an occasion last night to chat with SNY color commentator and former Mets pitcher Ron Darling at an event in New York City. He had these things to say about the passing of Yankees owner George Steinbrenner.
“He’s going to be missed. I saw him in a different light. It was always good news with George when I saw him,” Darling said.
Darling also recalled one time he was in the same elevator with Steinbrenner. He said normally The Boss would’ve smiled and given him a hug. This time, however, he didn’t even acknowledge Darling, because the Yankees had just lost. That’s how much the Yankees meant to him.
”(George) was one of the mavericks who changed the game forever. His personality matched the Yankees, and damned if you didn’t like it.”
