Reyes out of All-Star game with injury

NEW YORK (AP) – Rafael Furcal was selected to replace Jose Reyes on the National League All-Star team.
Reyes will miss the game next week after his sore right side flared up in the seventh inning of New York’s 4-0 loss to Atlanta on Saturday.
Reyes was voted to the All-Star game by the players, meaning Furcal, who was the next highest ranking shortstop on the player ballot, gets the nod. It will be Furcal’s second trip to the All-Star game after going in 2003.
Reyes ranged far to his right in the seventh inning to field a grounder by Troy Glaus near the outfield grass, then turned and made a long throw to first base for the out. Reyes grimaced after the throw and third baseman David Wright noticed it immediately, summoning manager Jerry Manuel and team trainer Ray Ramirez from the dugout.
Reyes walked around gingerly before eventually heading to the dugout.
He hurt his oblique on June 30 while taking batting practice before a game against the Florida Marlins in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Reyes returned on July 6 but has still struggled with the injury, and he had an MRI on his side and ribcage before playing in the opener of the three-game series against the Braves on Friday night. The results were negative.
“Something’s bothering him,” Wright said. “You have to do what’s best for this team. To get to where we need to get, we need him healthy in the second half.”
Reyes said that he had barely been removed from the game Saturday before Mets general manager Omar Minaya filed the paperwork to keep him out of the All-Star game.
The sparkplug shortstop said he has nine family members headed to Los Angeles and will join them for the festivities, even if he won’t be on the field. The team hopes to have Reyes when they open the second half at San Francisco on Thursday.
“I think Omar talked with the league already and they’ll probably have somebody else, but I’m still going because my who le family is here,” Reyes said. “Like I told you guys, I tried to play through it. I think the next couple of days, rest for me I think is going to help a lot.”
