Mets avoid sweep, win first away game vs. Marlins, 6-5

After more than an hour rain delay, the Mets jumped out to a 3-0 lead before the first out was recorded. Just like the other Mets starters in this series, Mike Pelfrey just didn’t have it tonight.

Pelfrey couldn’t even last long enough to qualify for the win as he allowed four runs on 12 hits in 4 2/3 innings. He tossed 108 pitches. He couldn’t seem to get his fastball going and therefore relied on his splitter and breaking balls.

With Jose Reyes a late scratch due to back pain, Puerto Rican native Jesus Feliciano filled in admirably. He got a leadoff single in the first. Ruben Tejada then reached first safely on one of the four errors the Marlins committed tonight. David Wright just missed a home run, doubling off the centerfield wall and knocking in two runs. Ike Davis followed up with an RBI single.

The Marlins answered back in the bottom of the inning on three singles and a double.

In the second inning, the Mets tacked on a run. Alex Cora led off with a double. Feliciano then singled, driving in Cora.

Neither team scored again until the fifth inning when the Marlins drove in two runs on five hits off Pelfrey. With two runners on and two outs, Elmer Dessens relieved Pelfrey and got the last batter to ground out.

The Mets added another run in the seventh inning when Jason Bay drove in Tejada.

The game got more interesting in the eighth. Bobby Parnell pitched a perfect seventh, but got into a jam in the eighth, the first time this season he has pitched more than inning in relief. He allowed a single and a double that drove in Chris Coghlan to make the score 6-5.

Jerry Manuel then opted to go to Francisco Rodriguez for a four-out save. After Hanley Ramirez was intentionally walked, K-Rod got Wes Helms to fly out.

In the ninth, K-Rod gave Mets fans another heart attack. He got Dan Uggla to ground out, but then gave up two singles. But he tightened up and got the final two outs, the last on a strikeout.

With the win, the Mets escape Puerto Rico and head to Washington to play four games against the Nationals. They should see rookie phenom Stephen Strasburg on Saturday. The Braves won again, so they stay a game and half behind but put some space between them and the Phillies, who lost.

Johan Santana and former Met Livan Hernandez will match up again Thursday night. The last time they met, Santana was terrible and the Mets couldn’t get to their former teammate. Let’s hope it’s the opposite this time.
