Mets lose first game of double header in mediocre fashioe

The Mets could only muster two hits all game in a 4-2 loss against the Padres this afternoon. Those two hits came in the first two innings, the second of which was a two-run homer by Henry Blanco in the second after David Wright walked.
This time, the Mets gave Johan Santana a two-run lead in the second, but he wasn’t able to make it stand up. Santana looked absolutely mediocre today. He walked four batters and allowed eight hits in 6 2/3 innings. He struck out only one batter, opposing pitcher Matt Latos, who was trying to sacrifice bunt. By the seventh inning, his fast ball was topping out in the mid-80s. That could be an indication of shoulder weakness a la John Maine. Whatever it was, it wasn’t a good performance. He gave up all four runs and took his third loss of the season.
The Mets offense was stymied by superb pitching by the Padres. Besides the misstep of walking Wright and allowing the two-run shot by Blanco, Matos was lights out. He and the rest of the Padres bullpen retired the last 22 Mets they faced in order.
The Mets ended their nine-game home winning streak. They’ll try to get things right again in the second half of the double header. Jon Niese will face Jon Garland, who is 6-3, with a 2.68 ERA. It’ll be a tough challenge. The Mets better wake up their bats.
