Mets complete shutout sweep of Phillies

In a historic series, the Mets completed the sweep by shutting out the Phillies for the third consecutive game, 3-0. It was the first time the Mets have shutout a team in a series since 1969, also against the Phillies.

After an almost two-hour rain delay, Mike Pelfrey pitched another gem. Even though he walked five batters, he was still able to go seven innings. Where he faltered with walks, he made up for them by inducing three double-plays. With a 7-1 record and a 2.54 ERA, Pelfrey has positioned himself as a Cy Young contender and a possible all-star.

As the series went on, the Mets offense diminished, only scoring three runs in this game. Opposing pitcher Cole Hamels, however, was the toughest starter they’ve faced in this series, so it makes sense they didn’t score as much.

Jason Bay got things going with an RBI double in the first inning. Jose Reyes would drive in the only other runs in the seventh. Reyes continued his hot hitting with three more tonight. Angel Pagan was the only other player with multiple hits as he had two.

Johan Santana will try to keep things going Friday night as the Mets travel to Milwaukee to play the Brewers. The Mets are now in third place, just two games out of first place and a half-game behind the Braves, who trounced the Marlins.

Other notes: NJ.com reported earlier tonight that Carlos Beltran still hasn’t been cleared for baseball activities [1].

Jon Niese will play in a rehab game this weekend [1] is slated to come back to the team next week, according to Mets.com.
