The Star-Ledger is reporting that Jerry Manuel has met with Oliver Perez and told him he is being reassigned to the bullpen. Perez lasted just 3 1/3 innings in last night’s 7-2 loss to the Marlins.
Perez allowed seven earned runs in the lopsided affair. He allowed nine hits, including four home runs, and three walks. He was given once more chance to prove himself against a team he’s had a lot of success with in the past and failed.
Speculation points to Hisanori Takahashi taking Perez’s place in the rotation. Takahashi has been pitching great in long relief. The lefty has a 2.74 ERA in 14 appearances and a 3-1 record.
The Mets need a starter who can give them a chance to win, and Takahashi should fit that bill, even though he hasn’t pitched more than three innings in a game. He was a starter in Japan, however, so he does have experience.
