Mets drop rubber game of series against Nationals

It seems like the Washington Nationals have the Mets’ number at Citi Field as they won the rubber game of their series 6-4. The Mets failed for the sixth time this season to win the deciding game of a series.
The Nationals have now beat the Mets four times out of six, all in Flushing, and once again moved a game ahead in the rankings. Out of the Mets’ eight home losses, half have come at the hands of the Nationals. The Mets better return the favor in Washington, as they’ll head down there next Wednesday and Thursday for a two-game mini-series.
Today’s game was decided by a slew of two-run innings. The Nats tagged Mets starter Mike Pelfrey for four runs, two in the second and two in the fourth. He lasted 5 2/3 innings with three walks and six strikeouts. It wasn’t a great start by Pelfrey, but he helped his own cause with an RBI in the second inning. The Mets were able to get him off the hook by scoring two in the second and two more in the fifth.
The top of the Mets’ order produced as Angel Pagan and Alex Cora had two hits and an RBI apiece. Jose Reyes contributed another RBI, although he’s still hitting way too many balls in the air and not driving in enough runs in the third hole.
In the end, however, it was the Nationals’ Roger Bernadina who would be the thorn in the Mets’ side today. Usually, it’s Josh Willingham. This time, Bernadina hit the first two Major League home runs of his career and drove in half of the Nationals’ runs including the game winners in the ninth inning off Francisco Rodriguez. K-Rod had come into a tie game. He has not been having a good year.
The Mets failed to get anything going against Nationals closer Matt Capps.
The Mets have a tough stretch of games coming up with no days off until May 24. That’ll be 17 games in a row they’ll have played. They’ll be facing the aforementioned Nats, Marlins and Braves, all on the road, and then finishing up with a homestand against the Yankees. The Mets will have a chance to create some major damage in their division of they can come away with a winning record during that time. Beating the Yankees at home would just be the icing on the cake.
