Today’s Mets headlines: Venting frustrations edition

Despite a very good outing by John Maine, the Mets could not pull off a win against the Nationals, who moved a game ahead in the standings with their 3-2 win last night. Maine allowed only back-to-back homers in his six innings.
The Mets’ offensive frustrations continued as they managed just the two runs on 12 hits. Even worse, they were just one for 12 with runners in scoring position.
For the second straight day, a Met was ejected for arguing a called third strike. Jose Reyes threw his bat and his helmet on the ground, prompting the ejection. Jerry Manuel then joined the fun and was tossed as well. On Sunday, it was David Wright whose strikeouts have been indicative of his situation. Buster Olney of ESPN.com writes how pitchers are getting into Wright’s head by pitching him high and tight . It appears as though Wright is still skittish after getting beaned in the head last season. However, this still doesn’t explain to me the high number of strikeouts.
The Mets could not come back, despite a ninth-inning solo blast from Angel Pagan, his second of the year. The Mets have now lost three out of four to the Nationals. They will try to get the offense going as they throw Jon Niese at the Nats tonight.
The lack of offensive production recently helped to send Frank Catalanotto packing. Chris Carter has been called up to take his spot on the bench . He’s been hot in Triple-A with a .339 batting average and six home runs. It’s about time, as Carter should’ve been the one with the team since Spring Training instead of Catalanotto. Gary Matthews Jr. had better watch his back. It’s good a thing for him the Mets don’t have a strong minor league center fielder waiting in the wings.
