Mets overcome bad start by Niese to beat Nats, 8-6

It looked like the Mets were going to lose their third game in a row at home after starter Jon Niese allowed six runs in just 4 1/3 innings on six hits and five walks against the Washington Nationals.
The Mets had not come back from more than a three-run deficit all season, they were down 6-1 in the fifth inning, and their offense had been stagnant, especially with runners in scoring position. That would all change tonight.
In a six-run eighth inning, the Mets would storm back, getting hit after hit. Number 4 and 5 hitters Jason Bay and David Wright combined for six hits, four runs and an RBI.
The bottom of the order produced as well as Jeff Francoeur and Rod Barajas knocked in two RBI apiece. Ike Davis, Angel Pagan and today’s call-up Chris Carter got the rest. It took Carter just his first at-bat to make a contribution, in contrast to Gary Matthews Jr.’s and the departed Frank Catalanotto’s dismal off-the-bench performances. On an umpires’ review, Davis missed a grand slam by just a few feet or inches.
Francisco Rodriguez got his fifth save of the season with a little help from Davis, who made his third over-the-dugout-railing catch to end the game.
The Mets try to win the rubber match as Mike Pelfrey takes the mound Wednesday afternoon.
