The Mets failed to finish a Giant sweep of San Francisco over the weekend, thanks to a whirling dervish of a day that ended up hurting the Mets more than it helped them.
Despite a poor outing by Oliver Perez, who seemed to walk the entire ballpark, the Mets were able to rally from a 4-0 deficit. They went ahead in the seventh inning but couldn’t hold the lead as Jenrry Mejia allowed a wind-blown two-run homer to put the Giants up for good. It was a disappointing outcome since the Mets were able to battle back in a game in which Tim Lincecum started. Alas, the sweep got away.
The wind is what caused havoc for both teams, but mostly for the Giants, who twice misplayed fly balls. The wind was so strong, it knocked balls sure to go deep in the outfield to closer to the infield.
In the end, the Giants beat the Mets 6-5 and ended their nine-game winning streak at Citi Field. In the midst of it all, David Wright got the golden sombrero and got himself ejected after yelling at the home plate umpire in the ninth inning. It was an important ejection because the Mets had used up all of their bench players. Had the game gone into extra innings, Jerry Manuel would’ve probably had to use a pitcher in the field.
It was particularly troubling for Wright, who is usually one of the players with the calmer demeanors on the team. Having the second-most strikeouts in the majors must really be getting to him for him to flare up like that, especially on Mother’s Day. His mother probably wouldn’t have been too proud of the things that were coming out of his mouth.
Hopefully, the wind won’t be so terrible tonight as the Mets face the incoming Nationals, who have surprised pretty much everybody. They are tied with the Mets in the standings and are just two games behind the Phillies in the division. John Maine will take the mound and try to get the Mets back into winning at home .
Adam Rubin of ESPNNewYork.com cites an unnamed source who says Perez will get at least one more start against the Marlins on Friday.
Josh Thole is being called up for tonight’s game , according to Metsblog.com. Henry Blanco is apparently on bereavement leave. He won’t be starting tonight, however.
