Mets take first place

The Mets swept their first doubleheader with the Los Angeles Dodgers since 1971 and moved into first place in the National League East in the process.
The Mets won the second game 10-5 despite an abbreviated start by Oliver Perez, who only gave up three runs but lasted just 3 2/3 innings. He had thrown 74 pitches and walked four batters.
Rather than let Perez dig himself deeper, Jerry Manuel opted to go to the bullpen and bring in Hisanori Takahashi. Despite walking in the tying run, which was charged to Perez, Takahashi pitched 3 1/3 strong innings in relief, allowing one earned run. He struck out five.
The Mets’ bats came alive in this game, scoring 10 runs on 11 hits. David Wright had a great night, going 3-for-3 with four RBI. Henry Blanco was the only other Met with a multi-hit game, but Ike Davis drove in three runs off a triple and a sacrifice fly. It was the first time the Mets scored double-digit runs this season.
With the win, the Mets are now in sole possession of first place after the Phillies and Marlins lost. They are a half-game ahead of the Phils. The Mets have won six straight games, the longest win streak in the majors right now.
The Mets try to sweep the series with L.A. Wednesday afternoon as John Maine takes the mound. He said he’s fine after leaving his last outing early with soreness in his non-throwing arm. We’ll see if it holds up.
