Mets blank Dodgers, 4-0, in first game of doubleheader

In what looked like it was going to be a short outing for Johan Santana turned into six shut-out innings as the Dodgers couldn’t take advantage of runners in scoring position. Santana threw 115 pitches, more than 40 of those in the first two innings, earning his third win of the season.
David Wright scored on a wild pitch, Jason Bay finally homered and Luis Castillo drove in two to account for all of the Mets’ runs. The bullpen was brilliant once again, only using Pedro Feliciano and Fernando Nieve to close out the game. This is good, so the rest of the bullpen can be rested when Oliver Perez pitches in the nightcap.
The Mets are on a five-game winning streak and are 11-9. They are tied with the Marlins and are just a half game behind the Phillies for first place. They’ll try to keep the mojo going tonight, but it might be a tall order. Teams playing doubleheaders usually split the difference and have to let the rubber match decide the series winner. The Mets will face knuckleballer Charlie Haeger.
