Johan Santana who? The ace of the Mets right now is Mike Pelfrey, who won his fourth start of the year and has lowered his ERA to 0.69, despite throwing more than 60 pitches in the first two innings.
In a game that was called with one pitch thrown by Raul Valdez in the 6th inning due to rain, Pelfrey kept the Braves off the scoreboard long enough for an unearned run to win it for him. The run came in the first after Jose Reyes stole second base. Jason Bay then got an infield hit, which advanced Reyes to third. Chipper Jones snagged the ball but threw it wide of first, dribbling away long enough for Reyes to slide home safely.
The Mets have now won six of their last seven games, four in a row, and are now tied for second place in the division. Granted, it’s a three-way tie with the Nationals and the Marlins, but they are only a game and a half behind the Phillies.
The Mets will try to continue their success when they face the Dodgers at Citi Field on Monday night. Oliver Perez will face off against Hiroki Kuroda, who is 2-0 with a 2.18 ERA.
In other news, John Maine said he is ready to make his next start. He left his last appearance early with soreness in his non-throwing arm. Apparently, he’s fine now and pain free.
