Today’s Mets headlines

Everywhere I turn, it’s Pelfrey, Pelfrey, Pelfrey!

There has been plenty of talk around New York today about Mike Pelfrey’s recent resurgence as a good pitcher. Granted, it’s only been three starts and a save chance, but he’s looked great since his ho-hum last season when he had a 5.03 ERA.

Mike Pelfrey pitched seven shut-out innings against the Cubs on April 20. (The Associated Press) [1]

He’s been a revelation so far this season, putting up numbers that many in the baseball world expected but did not get in 2009. His record of 3-0, with an ERA of 0.86 and 1.0 WHIP is tops on the team, beating out ace Johan Santana.

Whether or not he keeps this up remains to be seen, but right now, he’s the savior of this team, statistically and literally, accounting for half of the wins and the only save.

Andrew Marchand of ESPNNewYork.com says Pelfrey is giving the Mets a reason to believe [2]. ESPN’s fantasy expert Eric Karabell talks about how Pelfrey is still available in 83 percent of standard mixed leagues [3]. Marty Noble of MLB.com would like to remind you, however, that in addition to a masterful performance by Pelfrey, Jose Reyes got out of his funky town and went 4-for-4 [4] in last night’s 4-0 blanking of the Cubs.

Oliver Perez will try to keep the win streak going as he takes the mound tonight [5]. He’s going to try to improve upon his last outing, which was sabotaged by a breakdown in the bullpen. He pitched 6 1/3 innings of one-run ball to a tough Cardinals team. A win tonight would ensure Perez’s first, as well as the Mets’ first series victory.
