ESPNNewYork.com is reporting that the Mets have designated first baseman Mike Jacobs for assignment, leaving room for Ike Davis to be called up, according to unidentified sources.
According to the report, Jacobs was released to make room for the call-up of Tobi Stoner from Triple A to help out the weary bullpen from last night’s 20-inning game. When the now 13-member pitching staff is rested, Davis is expected to join the Mets to fill the ailing first base position.
It’s a move that many fans will be happy with and one that frankly makes sense right now. Neither Jacobs nor Fernando Tatis was performing very well offensively. Davis could be the shot in the arm the Mets need in that position and for the club overall.
What do you think of the move?

Maybe Davis is on the way, maybe not. Why not also DFA Frank Catalanotto and recall Chris Carter? It’s painfully obvious “Cat” has nothing left in the tank and he CANNOT play defense. While Carter may not be the greatest defender, he at least CAN contribute with the bat. We’ll never know as long as Catalanotto is still around.
this blog sux! bring back john delcos! wtf have you all done with him?
Although it’s true that Catalanotto hasn’t done much as a pinch hitter, he did produce against a tough pitcher last night. He had a hit, a walk and a run in a game where the Mets only had four hits. Maybe with more playing time, he will have better results.
But I agree with 86mets that Chris Carter might’ve been a better choice to keep on the roster. He had a tremendous Spring Training offensively. Sometimes Jerry Manuel just gets it in his head to stick with a player and Catalanotto is clearly one of the beneficiaries.
