The Mets ended their four-game losing streak by shutting down the Colorado Rockies yesterday afternoon. It wasn’t Johan Santana who served as the stopper. This time, it was Mike Pelfrey . It’s his second win in a row and makes him the leader of the Mets starting rotation. He even helped his own cause with an RBI.
Pelfrey pitched seven shut-out innings and allowing only five hits, the only hits the Rockies would muster. Once again, the bullpen was excellent. Pedro Feliciano and Francisco Rodriguez kept them at bay in the eighth and ninth. Speaking of Bay, even though Jason got his second RBI as a Met, he still left three runners on base.
The most troubling aspect of the game was that despite the win, it wasn’t because of a dominant offensive performance. The Mets still stranded too many runners in scoring position, and a few of the runs were a result of blunders by the Rockies. There also were base-running mistakes . There was nothing that encouraged the fan that the offense is actually improving. It just underscores the need for good pitching while the offense sputters.
Despite Jerry Manuel’s itching to move Jose Reyes to the third spot in the batting order , he might not do it yet this weekend in a series vs. the Cardinals. Reyes has said he doesn’t want to move until he gets his swing right. Jeff Francoeur told The Star-Ledger that he thinks the switch is a bad idea . Even if and when Reyes does move, Manuel has said he wants Reyes to maintain the same approach at the plate .
ESPNNewYork.com’s Adam Rubin provides a preview of the series against the Cardinals , which starts tonight at 8:15.
