Thank God for a day off.
I know it’s still early in the season, but after losing four of their first six games at home, the Mets need the day off to travel to the West Coast and take a deep breath. They need to recollect themselves after losing to the Nationals on Sunday, with Johan Santana on the mound. He was supposed to be there to stop the bleeding. Instead, he opened the wound a little more.
Santana lasted just five innings in the 5-2 loss, giving up a grand slam to Josh Willingham, who pretty much single-handedly won the game. He had all five Nationals RBI. Ian O’Connor of ESPNNewYork.com pontificates on whether Santana is regretting his decision to come to the Mets.
Despite a couple of defensive gems by David Wright and Jeff Francoeur, who made a double play by catching a fly ball and throwing a rocket to home plate, and a two-run homer by Mike Jacobs, the game was a disaster. Jacobs hopes his first of the year gets him off his terrible offensive start. Jason Bay is probably thinking the same thing about that elusive first RBI.
The frustration seemed to seep into Francisco Rodriguez’s outing after he hit Willie Harris on the arm. He apparently didn’t like something Harris said as he trotted to first base. A fight almost broke out as both benches cleared.
Adding insult to injury, Ryan Zimmerman was out of the lineup and the Mets couldn’t muster much offense against Livan Hernandez’s 85-mph fastballs and 62-mph curve balls. It’s unacceptable, writes Joel Sherman of the New York Post.
So, it’s good that the Mets have an off day to clear their heads and try to focus on a tough road trip. John Maine will try to right the ship as Luis Castillo returns to the lineup Tuesday in Colorado.

Wow, this team stinks, really stinks. I can’t figure out if their pitching or hitting is worse. They are baseballs version of the Knicks, over paid, under achievers, and run with the poorest administation. Trade Santana, Krod, and Beltran, keep Wright and Reyes, and back up the truck for the rest of them and start over. Nice job Omar, the highest paid team in the league and this team stinks.
