In case you were wondering where Raul Valdes came from in today’s 5-2 loss vs. the Nationals, you weren’t the only one. He came into the game and pitched effectively. He took over Sean Green’s roster spot. Green was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a right intercostal muscle sprain.
See the release below:
The New York Mets today announced that they placed righthanded pitcher Sean Green on the 15-Day Disabled List, retroactive to April 8, with a right intercostal muscle strain. The Mets selected the contract of lefthanded pitcher Raul Valdes from Buffalo (AAA) of the International League. Valdes will wear #22 and will be available for today’s game. In order to make room on the 40-man roster, the Mets designated righthanded pitcher Clint Everts for assignment.
Green will continue to receive treatment and will progress to baseball activities as tolerated. He appeared in one game this season, April 7 vs. Florida, allowing a home run to Dan Uggla in 1.0 inning of work.
Valdes, 32, appeared in two games this season with the Bisons, surrendering one hit and notching one strikeout in 0.2 innings.
The lefthander was in Spring Training with the Mets on loan from Tabasco of the Mexican League. Valdes was 0-0 with a 2.08 ERA in six spring games with the Mets. The 5-11, 190-pounder worked 4.1 innings, allowed three hits, one run, earned, with four strikeouts.
The La Habana, Cuba-native joined the Mets after going 2-0 with a 4.09 ERA in the Caribbean World Series helping Escogido to the 2009-2010 title. He worked 11.0 innings during the Series and led all pitchers with 13 strikeouts for Manager Ken Oberkfell’s squad.
Valdes has pitched in the Dominican League, Venezuelan League and Mexican League over the last two years.
Valdes was originally signed by the Chicago Cubs in 2004 after he defected from Cuba. He was released in 2006 and signed with the Mets in 2007. That season, Valdes appeared in three games with St. Lucie (A) of the Florida State League before being promoted to Binghamton (AA) of the Eastern League where he went 0-1 with one save and a 3.68 ERA in 20 games. He registered 28 strikeouts in 29.1 innings of work.
