Today’s Mets headlines

Joel Sherman of the New York Post reports that more than one person has told him that the Mets are looking to deal Gary Matthews Jr. , possibly to the Reds, now that they appear to have more confidence in the health of Angel Pagan.
That certainly would make sense as there will be an overabundance of centerfielders when Carlos Beltran comes back. Throw in Fernando Martinez waiting in the wings and you don’t really need Matthews Jr. It was a nice insurance, but you don’t need two policies if you only have one car.
The question is whom would they get back and which position are they looking for?
Nelson Figueroa got rocked today as the Mets took on the Marlins . He allowed seven earned runs in just 2 2/3 innings, all but driving the nail in the coffin of his bid to become the fifth starter. Since he’s said he doesn’t want to go back to Triple-A, this might be the last we see of Figueroa in a Mets game.
The Mets displayed pretty much their starting lineup for Opening Day, except for Figueroa. The promising signs came on offense. Even though they allowed an eight-spot in the third inning, they scored early and often. They chipped away until they tied it in the seventh. The game ended in that tie in 10 innings.
One of the big problems with last season was as a fan you got the sense that once they were down, they weren’t coming back. Hopefully, they can turn that around this year.
Mike Puma writes for the New York Post that the Mets management is a little worried about a power outage at first base . Daniel Murphy led the team last season with 12 homers, but that’s not saying much. He’s not your prototypical power hitter, but Ike Davis is. Murphy better turn on the power early if he wants to keep his job.
Matthew Artus of NJ.com writes that he doesn’t know how, except for Francisco Rodriguez and Pedro Feliciano, the rest of the Mets’ bullpen is going to shake out .
