Angel Pagan signed a $1.45 million contract with the Mets today, avoiding arbitration.
De facto first baseman Daniel Murphy and possible backup Nick Evans are hoping to learn a lot from Gold Glover and SNY color commentator Keith Hernandez. Mets management asked Hernandez to tutor them and he obliged. It’s training that is sorely needed for Murphy, who showed flashes of brilliance amongst some bone-headed blunders. If he can eliminate half of the errors he committed, he’ll turn into a pretty good first baseman.
Naming Murphy the first baseman all but quashes any chance for Carlos Delgado to come back to the team. According to a report in the Puerto Rico newspaper, Primera Hora, Delgado is OK with retirement if he isn’t picked up by any other team.
Further adding some questions to the mix at first is the imminent signing of Mike Jacobs to a minor league contract. The former Met might be returning to the fold if he can earn his way onto the Opening Day roster. Jacobs could add some power if he can reproduce numbers the numbers he had with the Royals last season. He had 19 home runs and 61 RBI in 128 games.
