The general manager meetings in Chicago end today and there has been a lot of talk about the Mets looking into acquiring a heavy hitter and some pitching.
The New York Post reports that Omar Minaya spoke with super-agent Scott Boras for 45 minutes yesterday about outfielder Matt Holliday, whom Boras is calling a franchise player worth close to the amount Mark Teixeira got from the Yankees. The Mets, who need a starting catcher, also are reportedly trying to acquire Bengie Molina or Chris Snyder from the Diamondbacks.
However, The Daily News reported that the Mets most likely aren’t in the market for Grade A+ free agents, settling instead for second-tier talent.
The proposed three-way deal to send Luis Castillo to the Cubs, Milton Bradley to Blue Jays and Lyle Overbay to the Mets doesn’t seem to be going anywhere now. The Mets should try to make some kind of trade to deal Castillo since his stock is so high from a solid 2009 season. That is, as long as it’s not a similar deal that gave an aging, fragile player like Castillo a four-year contract with the Mets.

They need to do a swap meet with Cinci. Trade Maine and Perez (eating half the money), Castillo, Davis and another young prospect for Arroyo, Harang, Phillips and Votto.
Since the Reds are reportedly looking to dump a bunch of salary and owe Phillips, Arroyo and Harang big bucks (33 mil next year or so) by taking Castillo and half of Perez they save aboout 21-22 mil in payroll, the Mets add the same 21-22 mil but get a new and improved 2b with speed and power, a young 1b who is very good and 2 expensive SP’s who are about a wash on what they traded. So 2b and 1b are filled in with more power and youth, the rotation is turned over and the still have prospects for a big deal like Doc Halliday. They can then either rotate Pagan, Carter and the rest in left (since they upgraded power at 1b) or get a guy like Dye for a year or two to fill in.
That’s not a bad idea. I like Joey Votto a lot. Except for that spell when he was out on disability for depression, he was a great offensive player. Harang is also a pretty decent starter, definitely better than Perez.
