Top 1: Pagan singles. Valdez walks. The Mets are getting something going early. Murphy strikes out. Francoeur flies out. Typical Mets, not taking advantage of a lead-off hit. Sullivan grounds out, of course.
Bottom 1: Chris Coghlan hits a leadoff home run. Way to go, Redding. Ross Gload and Hanley Ramirez fly out. Jorge Cantu also flies out. Good job by Redding to limit the damage but every ball was hit into the air and fairly deep.
Top 2: Tatis hits leadoff single. Santos grounds out, advancing Tatis to second. Hernandez hits an RBI double, tying the game at 1-1. That’s the way a lead-off hit is supposed to be capitalized on. The Marlins are appealing that Hernandez didn’t touch first base, but it was denied. Redding grounds out, advancing Hernandez to third. Pagan walks. Valdez hits a grounder to first, but Gload misplays it, allowing Hernandez to score. 2-1 Mets. Murphy hits a ground-rule double on a misplayed ball by Cody Ross, scoring Pagan, 3-1 Mets. Francoeur pops up, finally ending the inning.
Bottom 2: Dan Uggla walks. Ross pops up. Jeremy Hermida also pops up. Ronny Paulino strikes out.
Top 3: Sullivan hits another lead-off single and steals second. Tatis hits a deep fly ball but is caught, advancing Sullivan to third. Santos pops out. Hernandez is intentionally walked. Redding flies out. They squandered a chance to tack on.
Bottom 3: Redding strikes out Anibel Sanchez and Coghlan, his third in a row. Gload grounds out. Way to settle down, Redding.
Top 4: Pagan strikes out. Valdez hits a bunt single and then advances to second on throwing error. Over-anxious Murphy grounds out on the first pitch, advancing Valdez to third. Francoeur gets an RBI single, 4-1 Mets. Sullivan gets his second hit, advancing Francoeur to third. Sanchez is being pulled for Cristhian Martinez. Tatis strikes out.
Bottom 4: Ramirez hits a single. Cantu hits into a double play. Uggla strikes out.
Top 5: Santos doubles. Hernandez singles, advancing Santos to third. Redding sacrifice bunts and gets Hernandez to second. Pagan is intentionally walked, loading the bases. Santos tagged out on horrible base-running blunder when the ball went through the catcher’s legs but bounced back quickly. Santos got caught in the middle. It didn’t hurt the Mets as Valdez hits an RBI single. Pagan advances to third, 5-1 Mets. Murphy hits a two-run double, 7-1 Mets. Francoeur brings home Murphy on a single, 8-1 Mets. It’s nice to see the Mets finally getting things going their way. After five losses in a row, it’s a welcome change. The Marlins mercifully get out of the inning after Sullivan grounds into fielder’s choice.
Bottom 5: Ross grounds out before Hermida hits a double. Paulino grounds out to second. Marlins pitcher Martinez grounds out to Murphy.
Top 6: Santos doubles after Tatis grounds out. Hernandez flies out, and Redding grounds out.
Bottom 6: Coghlan homers, 8-2 Mets. Redding gets following three batters out.
Top 7: Mets go down in order.
Bottom 7: Redding gives up a third solo home run to Uggla, 8-3 Mets. Ross flies out. Hermida strikes out. Paulino walks, and that’s it for Redding. Dessens relieves Redding and one on pitch, gets the Mets out of the inning.
Top 8: Kiko Calero pitches for the Marlins. Francoeur and Sullivan strike out. Tatis crushes a homer, 9-3 Mets. Santos flies out.
Bottom 8: Pedro Feliciano relieves Dessens. Coghlan gets a bunt single. Gload reaches on his own single. With Ramirez coming up to bat, Jerry Manuel goes to the bullpen. Inconsistent Sean Green enters the game. Green gets Ramirez to ground into a double play. This usually happens to the Mets. It turns out it’s the good Green who showed up today as he closes out the inning with a flyout by Cantu.
Top 9: Renyel Pinto pitches the ninth inning. Hernandez gets his third hit of the game. When it rains, it pours. Pinch hitter Nick Evans grounds into a double play. Pagan hits a solo homer, the fifth of the game, 10-3 Mets. Every Mets position player has at least two hits. Valdez grounds out.
Bottom 9: Brian Stokes comes in to mop up. Uggla pops out. Ross walks and Hermida drops in a single. Paulino grounds into a double play to end the game.
It was a virtual hit parade today as the Mets had 17 of them to the Marlins’ eight. Redding gets just his second win of the year. The Mets avoid losing their sixth straight game. They’ll now fly to Chicago to take on the Cubs Friday afternoon. Pat Misch faces Ted Lilly.
