The Mets baby factory is about to churn out its second edition in just over a week. Mike Pelfrey thew the Mets a curve when he did not travel with the team to San Diego so he could be with his wife who is expecting their first child.
On July 30, Luis Castillo skipped the first game of a day-night double header against the Rockies, so he could accompany his wife during the birth of their second child. The difference is the Mets were playing at home at that time and they will be 3,000 miles away in San Diego when Pelfrey’s baby is due.
Of course, this doesn’t help the Mets’ starting pitching situation much. They were already scrambling to find a replacement for Jon Niese who left yesterday’s game with a severed hamstring for Monday’s start. Now they have to find one for Saturday’s start, too, merely two days away.
If I were Tim Redding, I’d be loosening up my arm right about now. Or maybe they’ll patch together a start using the newly acquired Elmer Dessens and Pat Misch as long men.
Anyway, congrats to Big Pelf. He might do it on the mound, but he didn’t balk at the chance to be ringside when Little Pelf arrives.
So, is there anybody else who’s expecting a baby soon?
