Angel Pagan CF
Alex Cora 2B
David Wright 3B
Gary Sheffield LF
Daniel Murphy 1B
Jeff Francoeur RF
Brian Schneider C
Angel Berroa SS
Jon Niese P
Top 1: Albert Pujols continues his hot streak with a double, but the Cardinals don’t do any more damage in the inning. Niese strikes out two.
Bottom 1: Pagan singles. Cora grounds into fielder’s choice. Pagan out at second. Wright hits two-run opposite field home run. 2-0 Mets. It’s his eighth home run of the year. Sheffield grounds out. Murphy grounds out to Pujols.
Top 2: Ryan Ludwick walks. Rick Ankiel hits into a fielder’s choice. Ludwick out at second. Yadier Molina reaches safely on an error by Wright. Joe Thurston hits into another fielder’s choice. Molina out at second, while Ankiel advances to third. Berroa tried to turn a double play but threw it wide and pulled Niese off the first base bag. Niese is hurt. He’s out of the game, needing assistance to leave the field.
Berroa is awful. The Mets should release him. He bobbled a ball in last night’s game. He’s provided three RBI but he hasn’t really helped the team that much. I know the Mets are shorthanded right now, but pick up someone off of waivers.
Nelson Figueroa has entered the game. He gets Cardinals pitcher Kyle Lohse to fly out. After Figueroa’s brutal outing against the Rockies, this could get interesting in a bad way.
Read the rest of the roundup after the jump.
Bottom 2: Francoeur leads off with a single. Schneider hits a ground-rule double, advancing Francoeur to third. Berroa hits a ground ball, but Francoeur gets caught in a rundown and gets tagged out at home. Berroa advances to second while Francoeur was in the rundown. Figueroa hits a two-run triple, scoring two. 4-0 Mets. Pagan hits a bullet to Ankiel, who dropped it, so Pagan gets a sac fly, scoring Figueroa. 5-0 Mets. Cora pops out. Wright hits a single, advancing Pagan to third. Sheffield ground into a fielder’s choice.
Top 3: Julio Lugo fouls out. Mark DeRosa strikes out. Pujols hits his second double of the game. He now has both Cardinals hits. Matt Holliday flies out.
Bottom 3: Murphy flies out. Francoeur doubles. It’s his second hit of the game. Lohse isn’t very good today. Schneider grounds out, advancing Francoeur to third. Berroa and Figueroa walk, loading the bases. Lohse is out of the game. Dennys Reyes relieves Lohse. Pagan grounds out.
Top 4: The diagnosis has come back for Niese and it sounds like it’s a right hamstring strain and not his knee. Figueroa hits Ludwick. Ankiel flies out. Molina grounds into a double play. If Figueroa pitched this well against the Rockies, the Mets might’ve actually won that game. Baseball is such a fickle game.
Bottom 4: Blake Hawksworth relieves Reyes. Cora grounds out. Wright walks. Sheffield grounds into a double play to end the inning.
Top 5: Thurston singles. Colby Rasmus strikes out. Lugo doubles, advancing Thurston to third. DeRosa pops up. Pujols is next. Figueroa hits his Pujols, the second Figgy’s hit someone in this game. Is it just me or have there been a lot more hit batsmen in Mets games recently? Holliday strikes out with bases loaded. This performance is more like the one we’ve been hearing about in Buffalo.
Bottom 5: Murphy singles. Francoeur grounds into a fielder’s choice. Schneider flies out. Berroa grounds out into a fielder’s choice.
Top 6: Ludwick flies out to right. Khalil Greene strikes out. Figueroa now has four strikeouts. Molina singles to Francoeur. Figueroa strikes out his second batter of the inning.
Bottom 6: Brad Thompson relieves Hawksworth. Jeremy Reed pinch-hits for Figueroa and promptly gets a leadoff double. Figueroa admittedly did a great job today. Kudos to him. Pagan hits his seventh triple, scoring Reed. 6-0 Mets. Cora singles, scoring Pagan. 7-0 Mets. Cora’s now hit in seven straight games. Wright is almost hit in the head by a pitch, presumably in retaliation for the two Cardinals that Figueroa has hit. The umpire warned both benches.
Wright grounds into a double play. Sheffield hits a hard ball that should’ve been a double, but he stopped at first and walked off the field. Cory Sullivan pinch runs for Sheffield. It looks like he injured himself again. Murphy flies out. Can anything else possibly go wrong?
Top 7: Bobby Parnell relieves Figueroa. Rasmus strikes out. Lugo strikes out. DeRosa grounds out. Nice inning by Parnell.
Bottom 7: Francoeur walks. Brian Schneider grounds into a double play. If the Mets weren’t up by seven runs, all of these double plays might be a little more disturbing. Berroa flies out. Let’s see if the Mets can avoid letting this game get away.
Top 8: Pujols finally grounds out. Sullivan snags a well-hit ball by Holliday. Ludwick flies out.
Bottom 8: Parnell hits for himself. He gets his first base hit in his first Major League at bat. Congrats Bobby! Trever Miller relieves Thompson. Pagan crushes the ball into centerfield to the left of the apple. 9-0 Mets. Parnell scores his first Major League run. Cora strikes out. Wright gets his third hit of the game. Sullivan flies out. Murphy strikes out. Let’s put this baby to rest and let what’s left of the team head out West.
Top 9: Schumaker grounds out. Parnell retires his eight batter on a strikeout. Thurston hits a ball into right field. Rasmus flies out to end the game. Parnell gets a three-inning save, the first save of his Major League career. Figueroa gets the win. It was a nice rebound from his last outing when he allowed six runs in less than two innings.
The Mets close out the home stand going 5-5, hardly the result they wanted and needed at the outset. In the last Mets poll, the 9 percent of you who said the Mets would split the 10-game home stand were right.
The Mets now head out to San Diego to start a seven-game road trip against the Padres and Diamondbacks. Although the Mets are a better home team than a road team, they will be playing some lower echelon teams. Hopefully, they can win five or six of those games. Let’s just hope there are enough players left to put up a good fight.
