Nelson Figueroa (0-1, 4.50 ERA) P
Figueroa returns to the team yet again to provide a spot start for the Mets. The rainout of Thursday’s game prompted this move since Johan Santana and Jonathon Niese pitched on the same day. Figgy last pitched in April against the Brewers and allowed three runs in six innings. The Mets only scored two runs that day.
I’m sure the Mets would take that effort again tonight. Sheffield is back in the starting lineup for the first time since coming off the disabled list. The Mets are hoping he can provide an offensive lift, pardon the pun, against Dan Haren, who has a 2.19 ERA.
The Mets could do little against yesterday’s Diamondbacks starter Jon Garland, who is a sinker ball pitcher. Haren also fits that mold. Sheffield came into yesterday’s game to pinch hit and stayed in left field after. He hit two balls well, but they were line drives right into opposing players’ gloves. To be sure, this is probably the most formidable lineup the Mets have had in a while. Wright, Sheffield, Murphy and Francoeur form a pretty good middle of the order, but will it be enough?
