Mike Pelfrey didn’t have his stuff today as he threw more than 100 pitches in just five innings, hitting two batters in the first inning in the process. He allowed three earned runs in those five innings after more than a 2 1/2 rain delay.
The Mets answered back in what looked like it was going to be a big rally in the fifth inning. Jeff Francoeur hit a home run and Alex Cora hit an RBI double to pull within one run. There were still no outs, but Brian Schneider grounded out, advancing Cora to third. Gary Sheffield entered the game to pinch hit for Pelfrey. He hit a well-struck ball but was caught. Angel Pagan then flied out to center, stranding Cora at third. They had three chances to score Cora and they didn’t get the job done.
Luis Castillo had two hits, but David Wright grounded into two double plays behind him. The Mets had seven hits total but could not score any more runs. Sheffield hit two balls well but the Diamondbacks made good plays to get him out.
Pat Misch relieved Pelfrey in the sixth. He hadn’t pitched in more than a week and a half and allowed a run in 1 1/3 innings. Tim Redding pitched in his second game in a row and allowed another run in 1 2/3 innings, which means he probably won’t start Monday’s finale. That honor will probably go to Nelson Figueroa.
What started off to be a promising home stand is starting to disintegrate into a less than .500 outing so far. Opposing pitcher Jon Garland, who had only won one game in his last 10 pitched a complete game. Danny Haren, who is 10-6, will pitch tomorrow and it will be a tall order to get a win.
