According to a statement released by the Mets today, Mets pitcher and former setup man JJ Putz will be placed on the 15-day disabled list. He will require arthroscopic surgery to remove the bone spur and fragments that affected him earlier in the season and for which he received a cortisone treatment.
He will have the surgery, which isn’t as extensive as open surgery, on Tuesday. It will take about six weeks for him to return to pitching form.
To take Putz’s spot on the roster, Fernando Nieve was called up from AAA Buffalo. The former Houston Astro was 3-0, with a 3.70 ERA in four starts with Buffalo.
