It looked like the Mets were going to lose this game as Livan Hernandez gave up five runs in the first two innings. He settled down and was able to get through five innings without allowing any more runs.
The Mets then proceeded to pick away at the lead. They actually scored first in the first inning off of a David Wright single. Wright had another amazing night, going 3-for-5, with a stolen base and four RBI, including a three-run double to tie the game in the seventh. Sean Green had come on and gave up another run.
Wright’s stolen base was one of four on the night. The Mets have been running like crazy. They’ve stlolen 11 runs in two games vs. the Giants who hardly have been able to stop anyone.
Giants closer Brian Wilson coughed up the lead in the ninth for the second straight game and allowed two runs after he caused an error on a bunt. That was enough for the Mets as Frankie Rodriguez once again closed the door. It was his 11th save of the season. He’s pitched four days in a row for the second time but is still perfect in save chances.
It was a bad night to be a manager as both Jerry Manuel and Giants skipper Bruce Bochy were ejected in the eighth inning.
Gary Sheffield also had a very good night in the cleanup position in the batting order. He was 2-for-3 and scored three runs. It’s a welcome sign. He’s not exactly the threat Carlos Delgado is but he’s been effective so far.
Ryan Church also seems like he might be coming out of his slump as he went 2-for-5. Jeremy Reed, who played first base for the first time since college, also had two hits.
It’s a good sign that the Mets were able to get to Tim Lincecum and now have a really good chance at winning the four-game series with Johan Santana on the mound Saturday afternoon.
